Amersfoort bids farewell to Spoffin with record number of visits

Going out with a bang: during the last weekend of August, Spoffin festival took place and Amersfoort could not ignore it. For the fourteenth and final time, the festival for street and location theatre treated the city to a special and diverse programme full of artists from home and abroad. The most diverse street theatre acts presented themselves at various locations in and around the Amersfoort city centre, and with that, Spoffin 2024 attracted a record number of visitors: approximately 46,000 over the entire weekend.

In July, the sad news came out that the 2024 edition will be the last edition of the Spoffin festival. After the municipality of Amersfoort had rejected the subsidy application for the period of 2025-2028 earlier this year, the objection of the organizing foundation Zomertheater Amersfoort (ZTA) was also dismissed in July. This threatens to make the only theater festival in the city disappear and the Netherlands loses one of the largest and most progressive international street festivals.

The 14th edition of the Spoffin street festival in Amersfoort, from 23 to 25 August 2024, will also be the last. As a result, the town's only theatre festival is in danger of disappearing and the Netherlands will lose one of the largest and most progressive international street festivals. Spoffin, which started in 2010, attracts around 40,000 to 45,000 visitors every year.
