Street arts festival Spoffin in Amersfoort is getting a sequel. Under the name Spoffin Spin-Off, the festival, which had its last edition in full swing in 2024, will return on Saturday, Augusts 30, 2025. It will be a smaller event than before, of just one day, but the organization is determined to keep the quality high.
Spoffin Spin-Off will take place at the Lieve Vrouwekerkhof and a number of nearby squares and spots. The aim is to have a program with about 10 groups and artists, mostly from the Netherlands. To save money, the festival does not go on long at night, so that no expensive lighting installations are needed. Instead, Spoffin Spin-Off will close with a fire performance. The program is expected to be announced around July 1, 2025.
After the Amersfoort City Council's decision not to grant a multi-year subsidy for the period 2025-2028, it seemed that Spoffin would disappear for good. But based on the enormous success of the last edition, with a record number of visitors and a very high rating, the organization did start looking for alternative possibilities.
'We wanted to prevent Amersfoort, after almost half a century of successful street festivals like La Strada, Etcetera and Spoffin, from being completely without one. Both the public and the artists would be the big losers,' says artistic director Alfred Konijnenbelt. For the Dutch artists too, the complete disappearance of Spoffin would be a great loss. Many festivals have already fallen over in recent years.'
In recent months the organization of Spoffin, which together with Amersfoort Theatre Terrace is part of the foundation Zomertheater Amersfoort, has been working hard on a relaunch. Numerous talks have been held, both internally and externally. The board and the organizing team are very keen to continue. The municipality also wants the festival to continue in some form. Several cultural organizations in the city have offered cooperation. Talks are also underway with several potential sponsors.
The organization is working hard to realize the plans in the coming months.
