Record number applications Spoffin OFF

20-03-2016 More than 200 groups and artists have applied to participate in this years OFF program of international street arts festival Spoffin in Amersfoort (NL). A record, artistic director Alfred Konijnenbelt says. Entries came from 35 different countries, and every year the quality and professionalism is higher. Konijnenbelt and his team selected 21 performances for Spoffin OFF 2016, the seventh edition of Spoffin, from August 25 to August 28 in Amersfoort.

Konijnenbelt: ‘Spoffin especially selects artists with original ideas. The majority of the artists who sign up for Spoffin OFF are dedicated to circus theatre. We have chosen a limited number of circus acts and complemented the program with street theater, dance, site specific theatre and a fire show. A notable entry is Stalker Teatro from Italy. They make big constructions of wooden sticks, together with the audience. Also special: the act with an armchair by the German dancer Lotte Mueller who was chosen best German solo dancer.’

TENT, Mimbre and HipSick
TENT circustheater producties (NL) has been no stranger to Amersfoort and Spoffin. After the performances LOOP and NET the company brings a new show called 3. Using a combination of acrobatics, juggling, tightrope walk and three poles, three men challenge each other and the audience to be part of a special friendship. Mimbre (GB), presenting Bench during Spoffin 2014 is back this year with If I Could I Would, a show about a seemingly normal woman and her wish for superpowers like Mary Poppins, Supergirl and the Hulk, to overcome obstacles in everyday life, using acrobatics, dance and humour. Everything but commonplace is HipSick Unusual Theatre (NL), previously on the program with HipSicknatus Monstrosus. This year the group will present Delikaat, an extremely visual stimulating show.

Guest programmers from England and Portugal
Spoffin has invited two guest programmers from fellow festivals to bring along one of their most favorite acts to the festival. Michelle Walker from Hat Fair (Great Britain) presents Of Riders and Running Horses by Still House, a stirring and visceral new dance event created as a communal animation of urban spaces. Cão à Chuva, a quirky clown who also was invited by Cirque du Soleil to perform in one of their shows is the contribution of Bruno Costa from festival Imaginarius (Portugal).

Fiery choreography
This year the fire comes from the French Impulse company: inspired by Asian rituals, Moksha mixes tribal sounds, fiery choreography to pyro techniques effects.

Konijnenbelt compiled the OFF program in consultation with an advisory committee consisting of Mirte Droogers (Amersfoorts Theater Terras), Adriaan Bruin (Festival Reuring, Purmerend), Claudia Geubel (Entr'act) and Casper de Vries (Spoffin PRO and De Tuin der Lusten).
