Swedisch Burt Out Punk will provide the opening show of Spoffin 2015.

Explosive fire circus opens Spoffin 2015

24-06-2015 Finally his wish comes true: Burnt Out Punks will visit Amersfoort. This hardcore, fire-driven, petrol-fuelled, anarchistic punk comedy circus show has been on the wish list of Spoffin’s artistic director Alfred Konijnenbelt for quite some time. The Swedish group will provide the opening show of international street arts festival Spoffin 2015 the 28th of August in Amersfoort.

Due to some financial setbacks it looked like the sixth edition of Spoffin would only be scheduled the 29th and 30th of August. Friday evening was cancelled, as well as the opening event, the Spoffin Amuses on Thursday evening prior to the festival. The festival nonetheless succeeded to organize a programme that is worthwhile visiting and treats the audience extra spectacular performances Friday evening.

Friday evening starts with the upcoming group Bandart Productions from Hungary with their performance Dancing Graffiti – There’s Always a Wall. This performance is a dance combined with live made digital graffiti, and it is like you have never seen before. After that the Burnt Out Punks make their Dutch premiere here in Amersfoort with their anarchistic fire punk circus.

The programme on Saturday and Sunday is filled with 30 different artists and 120 performances from various countries in Europe and even just outside of Europe. From The Netherlands itself is Arch8, a group with contemporary dancers, inspired by the Japanese writer Haruki Marakami and an act that goes right through the city centre of Amersfoort. Furthermore there are performances in the festival from Czech Republic, France, Spain, Russia, Norway, Hungary, Swiss and Brazil. Russia brings Mr. Pejo’s Wandering Dolls, a group that is specialized in mask theatre, mysterious stories and magic. They will perform their penetrating act Mignone and also a lively procession throughout the city.

A lot of street theatre groups are keen on involving the audience in their performances, which results in making the audience more than just a spectator. Interaction with the audience is an important factor that gives the decisive vote for artistic director Alfred Konijnenbelt to choose an act for the summer arts festival Spoffin. This years’ artists in residence will be the French Walkwoman. This group consists of seven dancing women who wear headphones and dance to the beat of the music while inviting the audience around them to join them in their dance. Whereas there are expressive and loud performances, there are also intimate and calm performances like the one Spanish artist Joan Català will bring. His performance Pelat can be just as exciting: dance, theatre and circus without all the artificial attire, because his only attribute is a wooden pole.

The festival doesn’t lack young talents this year. Cink Cink Cirk consists of recently graduated circus artists from the Czech Republic. The Amersfoorts Youth Orchestra will provide, with added theatre acts, a musical closing of the festival on Sunday evening. Prior to the festival this year are various workshops given by the Spoffin artists for spectators. Bandart Productions will provide a workshop to learn to dance with live drawn video images. Cink Cink Cirk will teach the fine tricks of juggling to everyone who signs up.
